Homefront Heroes of Portage County announced in November 2025 the launch of the historic new initiative for 2026: the Turn Portage Purple Campaign.
In partnership with Gold Star Mother Linda Dillon, who lost her son, Benjamin C. Dillon, this campaign represented one of the most meaningful efforts our organization has ever undertaken. In February 2026, following months of collaboration with the Portage County Commissioners and the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Homefront Heroes of Portage County successfully secured the designation of Portage County as a Purple Heart County. To commemorate this historic achievement, the organization hosted the Portage County Turns Purple Ceremony on May 28, 2026, bringing together veterans, elected officials, community leaders, and residents to honor the service and sacrifice of Purple Heart recipients and all who have served our nation.
This effort involved engaging key community stakeholders, collaborating with local elected officials, and building broad public support to secure this distinguished designation. By turning Portage County purple, Homefront Heroes sought to create a lasting tribute to the courage, service, and sacrifice of our combat-wounded veterans and fallen heroes. Through the installation of permanent Purple Heart County signage and continued community education, this designation will serve as a visible reminder that Portage County honors those who have borne the wounds of war and the families who have sacrificed in defense of our nation.
Achieving Purple Heart County status brings a meaningful recognition to the veterans and families who have borne the heaviest burdens of war. This designation honors Purple Heart recipients and Gold Star families through an official proclamation, permanent signage along county roads and buildings, and public ceremonies that highlight the true cost of freedom. It also raises community awareness of the sacrifices made by those wounded or killed in combat, promotes patriotism and unity, and fosters a spirit of gratitude throughout Portage County.
We were incredibly grateful for the opportunity to begin this important conversation and were proud to work alongside our county leaders to make this historic designation a reality. We are also deeply appreciative of the tremendous support we received from communities across Portage County. Thank you for believing in our mission from the very beginning and for helping make this historic achievement possible.
